While living a slow life at the ranch has helped his personal life, the couple has a hard time maintaining it. Selleck does it all himself on the property, from fixing roads to clearing bushes.

The drought in California destroyed his avocado plants. While in 2007, the actor shared selling avocados had proven to be very successful for him, just a few years after he shared that making a living from his avocados was getting tough.

Something surprising and not so nice happened when Tom Selleck and his wife were accused of taking a lot of water without permission. The water came from a hydrant near their home that was supposed to be for a construction site.

The Calleguas Municipal Water District claimed that Selleck took many truckloads of water. They said he used a big truck to go to the hydrant, fill it up with water, and bring it back to his property. They reported about 12 trips over two years, but it’s unclear if there were more trips that went unnoticed. So, they didn’t know exactly how much water was taken.

The officials told the actor twice to stop taking water without permission in late 2013, but he didn’t listen and kept doing it.

He had to pay $21,000 for a private investigation against him, and more money to cover damages. Also, he was not allowed to take any more water from the Calleguas Municipal Water District for his personal use.
