CSI Star Gary Sinise’s Son Overcomes Paralysis from the Chest Down to Pursue His Passion

Tragically, Mac Sinise, the son of Gary Sinise, passed away at the age of 33 following a prolonged battle with a rare form of cancer. The Gary Sinise Foundation issued a heartfelt tribute on January 6, 2024, announcing Mac’s passing.

On January 23, 2024, Mac was laid to rest, prompting Gary to reflect on his son’s courageous struggle against an incurable illness. Gary, known for his role in “CSI: New York,” expressed profound pride, gratitude, and a sense of blessing for having been Mac’s father.

In a poignant tribute, Gary shared memories of Mac’s life, highlighting his passion for drumming, which began at the tender age of nine. Mac’s exceptional talent saw him stepping in as a drummer for Gary’s band, the Lt. Dan Band, performing at various events including “CSI: New York” wrap parties.

Recalling those cherished moments, Gary fondly remarked, “Those were some great times, father and son rockin’ out together for the troops.” However, their family was rocked by adversity when both mother and son were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other.

The summer of 2018 brought significant challenges as Gary’s wife, Moira Harris, battled stage 3 breast cancer, undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Tragically, on August 8, 2018, Mac received his own devastating diagnosis of Chordoma, a rare cancer originating in the spine.

Gary delved into research, discovering the rarity of Chordoma, affecting only around 300 individuals annually in the United States. While some cases allow for successful treatment, Mac faced a daunting prognosis with a high risk of recurrence.

Fortunately, Moira’s cancer went into remission after treatment, but Mac’s journey was fraught with hardship. Despite initial surgery to remove the tumor, subsequent procedures and scans revealed the relentless progression of the disease.

Even amidst his health struggles, Mac remained dedicated to his role at the Gary Sinise Foundation, where he served as Assistant Manager of Education and Outreach. His responsibilities included managing archives, organizing events, and engaging with military personnel and their families.

Mac’s resilience and commitment to service continued until his health declined further after a third spine surgery in November 2019. His passing marked the end of a valiant battle against a relentless adversary, leaving behind a legacy of courage and unwavering dedication to others.

Gary observed that Mac Sinise’s friendly demeanor left a positive impression on visitors at the Gary Sinise: A Call-to-Action exhibit, as well as on participants in various local and national events.

The actor emphasized how Mac’s presence on the team was a true blessing, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the foundation’s mission and the individuals it served. Gary eagerly anticipated witnessing his son’s growth and progress within the organization.

Mac’s infectious enthusiasm infused joy and pride into the foundation’s activities, particularly during events like the Soaring Valor gatherings, honoring WWII heroes, and the Invincible Spirit Festivals, where the Lt. Dan Band lifted the spirits of wounded veterans nationwide.

Gary fondly recalled accompanying Mac on trips, where his dedication to their cause was palpable in every interaction. “I was excited to see him evolve within the organization,” Gary remarked.
